State Sen. John Arthur Smith addressed residents at a luncheon Tuesday, hosted by the Silver Spikes lobbyist group. Smith spoke about the legislative session and answered questions the public had. DEMING >> State Sen. John Arthur Smith, D-Deming and Rep. Dona Irwin, D-Deming, spoke at a luncheon Tuesday at the La Fonda Restaurant, hosted by the Deming-Luna County Silver Spikes, which lobbies for Luna County during the legislative session in Santa Fe, said John Strand, president.

Irwin was first to speak to the room of guests that was filled to capacity. She told residents this legislative session had been a challenge for with new leadership in play.

In January, the House of Representatives changed from being a Democratic majority to now a Republican-lead House. Irwin said the republicans had not had the majority since 1958.
