Featured Senator
Senator Lisa Curtis
For over 25 years Lisa K. Curtis, Esq. has worked to help people and their families hurt or killed because of the wrongful conduct of others.  The last 18 years she has been an attorney representing only victims in personal injury cases.

Lisa graduated from the University of New Mexico School of Law in 1993, where she was awarded the Tort Scholar Award for her graduating class.  After law school she immediately began civil trial practice.  Her practice has narrowed over the last decade to prosecuting primarily medical malpractice cases for patients or their families hurt by bad medical care.  She has handled and tried cases for medical malpractice, directly against insurance companies for bad faith insurance practices, automobile and trucking crashes, products liability cases, Fair Labor Standards Act violations and violent torts, including sexual abuse of children in both Federal and State Court and through the appellate courts.  Her focus remains to find justice for patients and their families suffering damage because of bad medical practice.

Lisa has been elected as President of the New Mexico Trial Lawyer’s Association 2011-2012.  She has been a Board Member for NMTLA for over a decade and has contributed articles to the Trial Lawyer’s Journal, assisted in the creation of the New Mexico and Federal Evidence Handbook, lectured at various seminars for most of her career, as well as serving as an Adjunct Professor for the UNM Law School Advanced Evidence and Trial Practice Class.  She is a member of the American Association for Justice, the National Trial Lawyers Association and the Trial Lawyers for Public Justice.

Lisa had the privilege of representing the Cardon family at trial against a doctor found by the jury to recklessly have caused the death of their much beloved mother.  The jury assessed a Verdict of over $6 Million against the doctor.  The New Mexico Medical Board later restricted that doctor’s license because of the jury’s Verdict, so that similar harm could not happen to another family.  Likewise, other bad doctors, like the surgeon who operated while an actively drinking alcoholic, or the powerful doctor that sexually abused and malpracticed on their patient, and others who have committed gross negligence have had their licenses surrendered or restricted as a result of cases Lisa has lead.

In Spencer v. Health Force she created case law protecting the vulnerable disabled population from harm and death at the hands of their home health care worker.  In other appellate cases she solidified rights of people against irresponsible insurance companies in both the Supreme Court and the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals in Sloan v. State Farm; protected the rights of children in the settlement of claims through our state appellate court, and is currently challenging the jury’s right to decide cases against the government under our Constitution.

Lisa was selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America, a Super Lawyer for New Mexico in Medical Malpractice, and a Top 100 Trial Lawyer for New Mexico by The American Trial Lawyers Association.  She was appointed by the Supreme Court and currently serves on the New Mexico Supreme Court Civil Rules Committee.

Lisa was known as Lisa K. Vigil for the vast majority of her career until she married a year ago and changed her name, with the blessing of her four children, to Lisa K. Curtis, which also changed the name of her Foundation to the LK Curtis Children’s Foundation which seeks out programs to protect and enhance the education and lives of children in New Mexico.
