Bill would ban candidates from paying themselves

A bill to be introduced in the state Legislature would make it clear in law that publicly financed candidates for state offices can’t use the money to pay themselves.

The measure – proposed by Sen. Peter Wirth, D-Santa Fe – would also prohibit publicly financed candidates from paying family members for campaign work.

“For a public financing system to work, it has to be credible to the taxpayers whose money is being spent,” Wirth says. “This proposed legislation makes it crystal clear that there is no scenario where these public dollars should be paid directly to candidates or their families.”
