Lawmakers eye forced mental-illness treatment

ALBUQUERQUE — Some New Mexico residents with severe mental illness could receive court-ordered outpatient treatment under a new proposal that is expected to go before lawmakers during the upcoming session.

Senate President Pro Tem Mary Kay Papen, D-Las Cruces, on Thursday discussed the proposed bill with the Courts, Corrections and Justice Committee months after advocates have been calling for reforms on dealing with residents struggling with mental illness.
