Op-Ed: Voter Support for Bonds A, B and C will Benefit Seniors, Public Libraries and Students
October 10, 2014
Op-Ed Submitted by State Senator Carlos Cisneros (D-6-Los Alamos, Rio Arriba, Santa Fe & Taos)
Santa Fe, NM – This general election voting season, New Mexicans will go to the polls to elect state and local representatives ranging from the Office of the Governor of New Mexico to local sheriffs and judges. And while each of these positions is vitally important, I want to direct your attention to the back of the ballot where you are asked to consider General Obligation (GO) Bonds A, B and C.
As co-author of this bill, I urge you to approve these bond questions. Bond A provides funding for senior centers; Bond B provides for library acquisitions; and Bond C will create $140 million in repair, maintenance and new construction of higher education facilities, including $4 million for UNM-Taos, the only community college in Taos County, to construct a Health Sciences Training Facility and Workforce Center.
Bond C is of particular importance to the wellbeing and economic security of Northern New Mexico, as it helps our community college keep up with unprecedented demand for higher education. UNM-Taos currently serves 1,850 students per semester, and one year ago was named the 17th fastest growing community college of its size in the nation, out of a pool of over 350 institutions.
Passage of Bond C will ensure that UNM-Taos will remain a driving force in our economy and in the lives of our citizens. In addition, Bond C will generate thousands of jobs and millions of dollars in commerce and gross receipts for the state. And it will do this without raising taxes, even by one penny, because older G.O. bonds that are being retired will offset the cost of the new ones.
Early voting runs from October 7 through November 1. Please let your family and friends know how important this legislation is for the future prosperity of our state. By turning the ballot over and voting for G. O. Bonds A, B and C you are saying YES to a brighter future for us all—with NO tax increase.
