Proposed Public Education Board Resolution to be Heard
Measure will enable voters to decide if politics should drive educational decisions
Santa Fe, NM –Legislation that would let voters decide whether to let public school education policy be decided by professional educators, instead of the changing gubernatorial administrations, will be reviewed by the Senate Judiciary Committee in the Roundhouse on Saturday afternoon.
Senate Joint Resolution 2 (SJR2), Board and Superintendent of Education, CA, proposes to create an elected state Board of Education that will appoint a qualified superintendent of education. The resolution will be heard in Room 321 in the Capitol on February 15. The Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to meet at 1:30 p.m. or after the morning Senate floor session ends. The floor session is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
“These last few years have seen the public schools in New Mexico being directed by the political climate of the governor’s administration instead of qualified professionals,” said Senator Michael Padilla (D-14, Bernalillo). “By having an elected board and a qualified professional educator directing policy, the public will have more control and say as to whom directs the futures of our children. Accountability takes a back seat when politics are involved.”
Senator Padilla encourages people to attend the committee hearing to support the measure. Otherwise, he hopes that those interested in the issue contact the state lawmaker in their district to voice their opinion. The meeting can also be viewed on the internet at http://www.nmlegis.gov/lcs/webcast/default_session.aspx.
