Senator Candelaria to File Resolution Requiring Advanced Education for County Treasurers

Santa Fe, NM – Senator Jacob Candelaria (D-26-Bernalillo) has introduced Senate Joint Resolution 19, requiring that county treasurers in New Mexico have increased educational qualifications as well as continue to receive related education throughout their tenure.

“The reality is that the job of county treasurers has gotten more complicated since 1912 when New Mexico became a state–they manage hundreds of millions of dollars by investing public dollars, in sometimes complex investment instruments,” said Sen. Candelaria.

This comes on the heels of a decision that the recall election of the Bernalillo County Treasurer may move forward. Last week, a state district judge authorized the gathering of required signatures   that would force a recall election of the treasurer.  Those in support of the recall claim that the treasurer’s investment decisions led to significant losses in taxpayer funded investment portfolios.

“It just makes common sense that folks trusted with this much public money should come to the table with appropriate training, and receive continuing education,” added Sen. Candelaria.
