Senator Peter Wirth to Appear on this weekend’s Report from Santa Fe on PBS

Santa Fe – Senator Peter Wirth (D-25-Santa Fe) will appear on Report from Santa discussing ethics, campaign finance reform/disclosure, and other transparency issues in the legislature.

Wirth is leading efforts to bring transparency to all aspects of government. In seven years in the Senate, Wirth has watched the transition to transparency at the Capitol, as webcasting of floor Sessions and committee hearings has increased. Progress continues on legislating transparency in campaign finance reform, donor disclosure, and lobbyist registration and expenditure reports. Wirth is co-sponsoring a bipartisan bill requiring oversight of PNM’s “pass-through” energy costs, again providing transparency for utility consumers.

In past sessions, Wirth has made progress on taxing out-of-state corporations, and this year he has a bill requiring national restaurant chains to pay the same corporate tax as New Mexico restaurants. In addition, the sunshine movement is expanding into some health-related areas and possibly the Secretary of State’s office.

Senator Wirth supports the bipartisan creation of an Ethics Commission in New Mexico – as this state is one of about eight states without one. Tax reform, payday lending caps, the need to get big money out of politics, campaign finance reform, and always TRANSPARENCY are among the many topics of discussion.

Senator Peter Wirth served in the NM House of Representatives for 4 years before elected to the Senate in 2008. He chairs the Conservation Committee. He has received many awards, among them the “Best in Government” award from Common Cause. Peter’s New Mexico roots go back several generations on both sides of his family. His maternal grandfather, John Gaw Meem, was one of New Mexico’s preeminent architects and his paternal grandfather was a math teacher and counselor at the Los Alamos Ranch School before World War II.

Hosted by veteran journalist and interviewer, Lorene Mills, Report from Santa Fe brings the very best of the esteemed, beloved, controversial, famous and emergent minds and voices of the day to a weekly audience that spans the state of New Mexico and has served as a window on what makes Santa Fe and the State of New Mexico truly unique.

During nearly 40 years on the air, Lorene Mills and Report from Santa Fe have given viewers a unique opportunity to become part of a series of remarkable conversations – always thoughtful and engaging, often surprising – held in a warm and civil atmosphere.

Normally, Report from Santa Fe airs on all three PBS stations across New Mexico: KNME New Mexico PBS/Ch. 5.1 – Santa Fe/Albuquerque – Northern & Central New Mexico Sunday mornings, 8:00 a.m.: KENW/Channel 3 – Portales – Eastern New Mexico, Saturday afternoon, 6:00 p.m.; KRWG/Channel 22 – Las Cruces – Southern New Mexico, Sunday mornings, 8:00 a.m.
