State study shows film perks linked to job gains, economic boost

One of New Mexico’s long-running political controversies ended Tuesday when an independent company found that taxpayer subsidies for moviemakers and TV producers help the state’s economy.

The study’s conclusion, three years in the making, had rival camps praising Hollywood, something that once seemed impossible.

Gov. Susana Martinez wanted to cut state subsidies for the film and TV industry when she took office three and a half years ago, saying so much money going to moviemakers was shortchanging critical needs.

Her political adversaries, led by state Rep. Brian Egolf, D-Santa Fe, countered that movies and television shows are a clean, growing industry that deserves taxpayer support because it is putting thousands of people to work.
