Active Shooter Training Pilot Project Status and Expansion Press Conference August 19
Success of Training Pilot Project Could Lead To State and National Expansion

Santa Fe, NM – Senator Michael Padilla (D-14-Bernalillo) and Diego Arencon, President of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local 244, will hold a joint press conference on Tuesday, August 19, at 10:30 A.M., at Fire Station 32, located at 1701 Arenal Blvd SW in Albuquerque to discuss the current status of the pilot program designed to provide active shooter training for fire and rescue professionals in Bernalillo County.

In 2014, Sen. Padilla sponsored a $50,000 appropriation that was included in the most recent state budget, making the pilot program possible. Sen. Padilla said he also plans to use the press conference as an opportunity to announce the introduction of additional legislation to expand the training state-wide and nationally, through a first-of-its-kind active shooter training facility in the nation. He also plans to speak about funding grants for training other fire and rescue departments.

“Active Shooter training can literally save lives because it brings fire and rescue professionals into the situation faster, and sometimes it’s mere seconds that make all the difference in saving lives,” said Sen. Padilla.

Diego Arencon said he supports this initiative, adding, “This training is critical for today’s adverse societal demands. Senator Michael Padilla has shown great leadership and foresight in spearheading this public safety initiative.”
