SANTA FE, NM – Today, New Mexico State Senate Majority Leadership issued the following joint statement in response to the U.S. Supreme Court overturning abortion protections in Roe v. Wade:

“We are deeply disappointed by the cruel ruling handed down by the Supreme Court today that overturns a person’s right to make their own reproductive healthcare decisions.  It is a sad day in our country’s history when privacy rights that were finally realized and guaranteed for 50 years are eliminated.

Overturning Roe v. Wade is dangerous and irresponsible. This action will deny access to healthcare for millions and put lives at risk, especially people of color and those that are financially disadvantaged.  Make no mistake, the Court’s decision will not stop abortions–it will only stop safe abortions.

Thankfully, abortion care will continue to be legal in New Mexico. We will do all we can to protect the right to healthcare for everyone in our state, and help our neighbors in states who are now seeing their access to safe and legal healthcare blocked by politicians putting their power and control over others’ very personal decisions.”
