Revival of public works bill wanted

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

The death of a $264 million public works package on the final day of New Mexico’s 60-day legislative session continues to prompt calls for a revival.

The Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce, in a letter sent Tuesday, urged Gov. Susana Martinez and top-ranking lawmakers to resume discussions over the public works, or capital outlay, bill and approve it during a brief special session.

The business group also is pushing for a $4.8 million bundle of tax breaks to be on the agenda of a potential special session. The tax break package was approved in the House but died in the Senate in the regular session’s final minutes.

“The capital outlay package and the tax incentive package are essential for job growth,” five chamber officials wrote in their Tuesday letter. “We are optimistic that an agreement on these bills can be reached for the benefit of all New Mexicans.”
