Senator Carlos Cisneros Elected 2018 Border Legislative Conference Chair

Santa Fe, NM

The Border Legislative Conference (BLC) takes place this week in Santa Fe, led by newly elected Chair New Mexico State Senator Carlos Cisneros (D-Los Alamos, Rio Arriba, Santa Fe, & Taos).

The BLC is a program administered by The Council of State Governments and its regional partner, the Southern Legislative Conference of The Council of State Governments (SLC) that serves as a mechanism for on-going dialogue and collaboration among state legislators of the United States and Mexico.

Membership in the BLC is comprised of legislators from the ten states along the U.S.-Mexico border. These states include California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas in the U.S., and Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, and Tamaulipas in Mexico.

Senator Cisneros brings an array of legislative experiences on issues including economic development, the environment, water, and finance to his role as the 2018 Chair of the Border Legislative Conference. He currently serves as Vice Chair of the Revenue Stabilization & Tax Policy Committee, and Vice Chair of the Senate Finance Committee.

As the newly elected Chair, Cisneros will serve as host to the 31st Border Legislative Conference taking place in in Santa Fe August 9-11. Topics the group will discuss at the conference include NAFTA, DACA, adapting to a changing border climate, and energy in the border region. Experts, academics, and officials from throughout the region are expected to attend.

“Working in close collaboration with fellow border legislators from the US and Mexico on the issues we share has never been as critical as it is today,” Said Senator Cisneros. “Together, we can learn from each other and begin to address the serious concerns facing our regions, like climate and energy issues, trade, and immigration-related matters. I look forward to chairing the BLC and hosting my colleagues here in the beautiful state of New Mexico for this important gathering.”
