Candidates using public campaign funds would no longer be allowed to use those funds to pay themselves or their relatives to campaign if the Legislature passes a bill pre-filed this week by a Santa Fe senator.

Senate Bill 58, sponsored by Sen. Peter Wirth, D-Santa Fe, also would prohibit any public money from being used by candidates who have no opponent.

In addition, the bill would address a section of the state’s campaign finance law that was struck down by a 2011 Supreme Court decision.
